A Bakery Menu App

Beautifully Baked

Project Overview

The Product:

Beautifully Baked, an elegant bakery menu app, empowers users to effortlessly explore local bakery menus, seamlessly search for their specific cravings, and conveniently place orders. Whether you prefer pickup or delivery, the choice is yours.

Project Duration:

3 Months

My Role:

Lead UX designer and UX researcher

My Responsibilities:

User research, Prototyping, Mockups, User journey map, personas, Paper wireframes, Digital wireframes, Low-fidelity prototype, Usability studies, High-fidelity prototype, Accessibility

The Problem:

Discovering a new bakery can feel like an overwhelming process. It often involves searching for nearby bakeries, sifting through menus on their websites, evaluating your desire to place an order, and navigating delivery options. My vision is to create an app that not only streamlines these tasks but also offers additional features to make the entire bakery selection experience more seamless and delightful.

The Goal:

Beautifully Baked is designed to provide users with an up-to-date menu and the convenience of pre-ordering, catering to those who require takeout or delivery services. This added feature enables users to save time by bypassing in-store lines. To gauge the app's effectiveness, we will assess its impact by monitoring the daily order volume facilitated through the application.

Understanding The User

User Research: Summary

I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who need fast and easy ways to navigate through a app menu and order.

This user group confirmed initial assumptions, but research also revealed that time wasn’t the only problem. Other user problems included challenges to pay online, having a delivery option, and being able to pick a pick up time early in advance.

Personas

Problem Statement: Olivia is a single mom living in California who needs an easy way to find baked goods her picky son will eat because they liked to try and recreate them together.

Problem Statement: Henry is a busy man with his own startup company who wants keep his employees happy because of all the hard work they do for his company and he wouldn’t be this far without them.

Pain Points:

  1. Time: Working adults are too busy and need easy ways to navigate a website or app.

  2. Accessibility: Food ordering platforms not having enough dietary options.

  3. IA: Text heavy and cluttered menus make it difficult to read and order from.

  4. Search/Filter Options: Not having enough options of dietary options and not being able to filter exactly what users are looking for.

User Journey Map

Goal: An easy and quick way to find local bakeries and order baked goods for pick up or delivery. Mapping the users journey revealed how helpful it would be for users to have access to an app.

Usability Study

Research Questions:

  1. How long does it take for users to find and order from a bakery?

  2. Are there any parts where the user is getting stuck and or not finishing an order?

  3. What is the user's main goal when trying to order from an app?

  4. What app or website do user’s use to search for and order from?

  5. Why would a user use this app instead of another popular app?

Participants:

5 Participants between the ages of 20-75 who live in different areas of the country. Participants order out at least 2 a month.

Methodology

  • 10-15 of minutes

  • United States

  • Interview usability study

  • Users were asked to order an item from a bakery.

Themes:

Users wanted to order under 5 minutes

Supporting evidence from the usability study.

  • 4 out of 5 participants want to have more add to cart buttons.

  • 3 out of 5 participants wanted to be able to re-order from past orders and favorites.

Users wanted more search options and a filter option

Supporting evidence from the usability study.

  • 3 out of 5 participants wanted to have more search bars.

  • 3 out of 5 participants wanted to be able to filter exactly what they were looking for.

  • 2 out of 5 participants wanted to have more dietary search options that were more accessible.

“I would like to have more options to add to my cart. Having one just on the full menu page isn't enough. I want to be able to see something I like and quickly add it.”

"I would like a way to find gluten free options quickly. I get frustrated with bakeries and trying to find gluten free options."

Users wanted more information about each item

  • Supporting evidence from the usability study.

    • 3 out of 5 participants wanted to have a pop up when clicking on an item.

    • 2 out of 5 participants wanted to see reviews for the bakery itself and the items.

"I would of wanted to be able to click on an item and have a pop up with more information about that item.”

User Flow Outline

I crafted a user flow outline to illustrate the seamless journey users would undertake as they progress from the initial search for a bakery to the final stages of ordering their desired item. This structured approach not only provided a clear blueprint for my project but also guided my efforts to ensure that the app's design would be optimized for exceptional user-friendliness.

Paper Wireframes

I made 5 wireframes of the homepage for my bakery menu app. The 6th wireframe is a combination of my favorite aspects of the other 5. I wanted to make sure to include specific aspects to every wireframe as you can see at the bottom of the page.

I wanted to create a homepage that was easy to navigate with a lot of different bakeries and baked good choices. I added the profile picture in the top right corner to add some personal touch to the homepage. I want this page to be colorful and inviting.

Digital Wireframes

Low-Fidelity Prototype

Utilizing the finalized set of digital wireframes, I developed a low-fidelity prototype that can be used in a usability study.

Research Study Plan

Introduction

Title: Creating a Bakery menu app

Author: Bailey Wheatman, UX designer, Baileyjoywheatman@gmail.com

Stakeholders: List the names of project stakeholders and their roles

Date: July 2023

Project background: We are creating an app that helps users find and order from different bakeries near them. We need to figure out if finding and ordering from different bakeries near a user is easy for users. We would like to understand what challenges users might face in the ordering, payment and pick up or delivery process, and how we can fix those challenges.

Research goals: Figure out if users can use the flow of the app easily and quickly.

Methodology

  • Interviews.

  • Location: United States in the office.

  • Asking people open or closed questions and asking them to do a task.

  • Sessions will take place during the week of October 1-5, 2023

  • Will ask 35 people to take the interview.

  • Interviews will take about 10-15 minutes to finish.

KPIs

  • Time on task

  • Navigation vs. search

  • Drop-off rates

Participants

Participants are people who have busy schedules and order baked goods at least twice a month, whether it’s a business task or social task. This could be for office meetings, friend groups, family, or for themselves.

  • They don’t have to only be interested in ordering baked goods.

  •   10 female, 10 male, 5  Nonbinary, all aged 20-75 years old.

    • 5 users of assistive technologies(keyboard, screen reader)

    • 5 users that have different food allergies.

Script

Interview:

  • Intro

    • Before we begin, do I have your consent to take both audio and video recordings of this interview?

    • I want you to know that this isn’t a real test. There is no “right” answer, and none of your responses will be considered wrong.

    • If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

    • This data is being collected to help create an app that makes seeing menus, ordering from, and finding new local bakeries easier for people to use.

    • Basic questions:

      • Do you live in an area with lots of bakeries?

      • Do you have a favorite bakery?

      • How many times in a month do you go to a bakery?

      • How many options of baked goods do you prefer when going to a bakery?

      • Do you like to customize specific baked goods through an app or in person?

      • Do you usually order for yourself, or for a group?

    • Great! If you’re ready, let's move onto the task you’ll be working on.

Prompt 1: Open the BakeryMart app on your phone and find a bakery you’d like to order from.

    • Follow-up: How easy do you feel it is to find a bakery that interests you? What was easy and what was challenging?

  • Prompt 2: Go through the bakery’s profile and put together an order. Order as much or as little as you’d like.

    • Follow-up: Did you find anything confusing?

    • Follow-up: How easy do you feel it is to navigate and add to an order from the bakery’s profile page?

Sticker Sheet

Mockups

I changed the color of the header from white to black for accessibility.

I changed the layout of each item card to make it easy to use and consistence with other pages of the app.

High-fidelity Prototype

Accessibility considerations

One:

All icons and buttons stay consistent to make it easier to navigate through the app.

Two:

Label everything to make app more accessible to users using screen readers.

To include different dietary options for users with different allergies.

Going Forward

  • Takeaways

  • Next Steps

Takeaways

Impact:

My app will help users with all different backgrounds and stories to easily enjoy local bakeries with an easy all in one app. Not only will this be good for local companies, but also keep users interested and coming back for more.

Next Steps:

  • Conduct another usability study to validate if the pain points users experienced have been addressed.

  • Continue to research and update the app for new areas of need.

What I learned:

Throughout the design journey of the Beautifully Baked app, I learned that first ideas are just that, first ideas. I continued to add different ideas to my app throughout the whole design process. Also talking to users and peers about my app and ideas help me come up with different features and helped me discover new and different ways to keep my app usable and accessible.
